  18. automatically to your desktop. BackWeb makes this possible by sending
  19. software and data to you in the background, taking advantage of your

  37. A. System Requirements

  41.                        (Version 1.2 is available for Windows 3.11)

  43.   Minimum Hardware:    486 66MHz, 16MB RAM

  45.   Disk Space:          4MB for the BackWeb software and 6MB per channel (user
  46.                        configurable)

  54. B. Installation
  55. ============================================================================

  60.   Before you begin, make sure you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

  62.   1. In the CD drive, change directory to \CLIENT\WIN95\SETUP.
  63.   2. Double-click the SETUP.EXE file to install BackWeb on your computer.
  64.   3. Following installation, BackWeb is launched and you are taken on a
  65.      "guided tour" of the system where you can go through Quick Setup steps
  66.      to customize BackWeb to meet your specific needs.

  68.   Quick Setup enables you to:
  69.    * View and interact with a sample InfoPak.
  70.    * Specify whether InfoPaks should be automatically or manually played.
  71.    * Register to channels of your choice from a Channel Directory.
  72.    * Specify the maximum amount of disk space per channel that you wish
  73.      to allow for the storage of InfoPaks.

  77. C. Uninstalling BackWeb

  80.   1.  In your system Control Panel, launch Add/Remove Programs.
  81.   2.  Choose BackWeb from the list.
  82.   3.  Click Add/Remove to uninstall BackWeb.

  86. D. Subscribing to BackWeb Channels
  87. ============================================================================

  89. Once you have installed BackWeb, you need to subscribe to "channels" to
  90. receive information with your BackWeb software.
  91.  
  92. Go to the BackWeb Web site (http://www.backweb.com/) to subscribe to the
  93. wide range of channels or sources of information that interest you.  This
  94. subscription process is done through the Web. After that, you will receive
  95. the information from these channels via BackWeb.

  99. E. Internet Connection and Communication
  100. ============================================================================

  102.   The following is relevant to users who are connected to the Internet
  103.   via a corporate network (LAN) and corporate firewall.  It is also relevant
  104.   to users who are connected to the Internet via an online service.  In
  105.   both of these cases, there is a possibility that your Internet connection
  106.   (either because of the corporate firewall configuration or because of
  107.   the way the online service communicates with the Internet) does not
  108.   support the standard communication protocol called UDP.  If this is
  109.   the case, your BackWeb software will not communicate over the network
  110.   using the Polite Agent mode.
  111.  
  112.   This version of BackWeb introduces the option to have BackWeb communicate
  113.   with another standard communication protocol called HTTP.  This will allow
  114.   anyone with an Internet connection to use BackWeb, regardless of
  115.   corporate firewalls or online services.
  116.  
  117.   It is recommended that you use the Polite Agent mode if possible,
  118.   as it offers substantial benefits to users - it allows the background
  119.   communication to happen in an unobtrusive, discreet way.  HTTP is
  120.   not as "polite," and you will sometimes notice it working even though
  121.   BackWeb is running in the background.
  122.  
  123.   This note is only relevant if you want to use the Polite Agent
  124.   mode even though you are behind a corporate firewall:
  125.  
  126.   By default, BackWeb requires that your corporate firewall allows UDP
  127.   packets with destination port 370 to go out from your network to the
  128.   Internet, and UDP packets with destination port 371 to come in from the
  129.   Internet to your network.
  130.  
  131.   You can select the UDP port through which BackWeb will connect to the
  132.   Internet from the Advanced Settings dialog in the Connection tab of the
  133.   Setup dialog.

  136. ============================================================================
  137. F. Known Issues
  138. ============================================================================
  139.  
  140. 1. BackWeb software configures your browser to include a registration
  141.    helper application. If for some reason this setting is missing, you may
  142.    enable channel registration via Web sites by the following steps.
  143.  
  144.    If you are using Netscape Navigator:
  145.     Launch the browser and select General Preferences in the Options menu.
  146.     Click the Helpers tab and Create New Type. Enter 'application' in the
  147.     Mime Type field and 'x-iad' in the Mime Sub Type field. Enter 'iad' in
  148.     the File Extensions field. Select the radio button "Launch the
  149.     Application", and browse for register.exe in the BackWeb program folder.
  150.     The default location is "C:\Program Files\BackWeb\BackWeb\program".
  151.     Click OK to close the dialog.
  152.  
  153.    If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer:
  154.     Launch the browser and open the Options dialog in the view menu.
  155.     Click the File Types tab. 
  156.     Click the New Type button. Fill in the following values in the
  157.     corresponding fields.
  158.       Description of type:   BackWeb Registration
  159.       Associated extension:  .iad
  160.       Content type (MIME):   application/x-iad
  161.       Default Extension:     .iad
  162.     Make sure to uncheck Confirm Open After Download.
  163.     Click the New button to open the New Action Dialog. Enter 'open' in
  164.     the Action field. Browse for register.exe in the BackWeb program folder.
  165.     The default location is "C:\Program Files\BackWeb\BackWeb\program".
  166.     Click OK to close the dialog. Close the parent dialogs by clicking the
  167.     Close button.
  168.  
  169.    If you are using a different browser, you may look for the instructions
  170.    on how to associate actions with MIME types and extensions. Associate
  171.    MIME type application/x-iad and the extension .iad with the program
  172.    "C:\Program Files\BackWeb\BackWeb\program\register.exe".
  173.  
  174. 2. In some cases where the Netscape browser was unable to locate the
  175.    server of the given URL, it becomes impossible to invoke Web pages from
  176.    BackWeb. In order to continue, click the OK button in the Netscape
  177.    window to close the "Unable to locate server <URL>" message box.
  178.  
  179. 3. Plug-in applications launched from InfoPaks may produce sound even
  180.    when the InfoPak is muted.
  181.  
  182. 4. If you have installed a plug-in or QuickTime / QuickTime VR software
  183.    during the current BackWeb session, you still may not receive InfoPaks
  184.    that require these plug-ins. In order to recognize the installed plug-ins,
  185.    shut down BackWeb (from the File menu) and re-launch BackWeb using the
  186.    system Start button. Alternatively, you may restart your system so that
  187.    BackWeb will be automatically re-launched.
  188.  
  189. 5. After installing Microsoft Java VM, you must restart your system prior
  190.    to playing InfoPaks that include Java applets.
  191.  
  192. 6. Under Windows NT 4.0, BackWeb does not allow interaction with screen
  193.    saver InfoPaks. The Interaction group in the Screen Saver tab of the
  194.    Global Options is therefore grayed out.
  195.  
  196.    If you wish to interact with a BackWeb screen saver (that's designed to
  197.    support interaction), you may play it manually from within the BackWeb
  198.    Window.  This will give it the appearance of a screen saver but the
  199.    properties of a Flash, which can be interacted with.
  200.  
  201. 7. If you use the Netscape browser, we recommend that you do not include the
  202.    executable in your StartUp folder. Every time that BackWeb starts up, it
  203.    makes sure that Netscape is set up properly allowing you to add BackWeb
  204.    channels. However, due to the way Netscape works, this verification is
  205.    only effective when Netscape is not running.
  206.  
  207.    If you have Netscape in the StartUp folder, it is quite possible that
  208.    Netscape will already be running every time that BackWeb starts up, and
  209.    the set-up routine required for adding BackWeb channels will not take
  210.    place.
  211.  
  212.    If you must put Netscape in the start-up folder, you can make sure that
  213.    the set-up is done properly at least once by manually shutting down both
  214.    Netscape and BackWeb (by choosing Shut Down BackWeb on BackWeb's File
  215.    menu), then restarting BackWeb and then Netscape. You should then try
  216.    registering to a new channel (via Add Channel using Web Directory on
  217.    BackWeb's Channel menu) to make sure everything is working properly.
  218.  
  219. 8. If you invoke Netscape Gold version 2.02 via the BackWeb interface (or
  220.    by interacting with an InfoFlash) and the browser is already active,
  221.    BackWeb might not bring the browser window into focus. You may use
  222.    <Alt>-TAB to focus on the browser's window.
  223.  
  224. 9. If you are using Internet Explorer 2.0, you may encounter problems
  225.    registering with some BackWeb channels where the CGI script generates
  226.    a file of an extension different than '.iad'. 
  227.  
  228.    This problem occurs when Internet Explorer 2.0 looks for a helper
  229.    application based on the file extension rather than the MIME type 
  230.    provided (application/x-iad). For example, if the CGI script which
  231.    prepares the channel registration data is a perl script whose name
  232.    is 'xxx.pl', then the IE 2.0 looks for a program which is associated
  233.    with the extension '.pl' instead of using the given MIME type.
  234.  
  235.    To work around this problem, use the "Save As" option to save the
  236.    registration file in your disk with the extension '.iad'. Double-click
  237.    the saved file to register with the channel 
  238.  
  239. 10.  Note that you might experience problems receiving InfoPaks from some
  240.    of the channels if you configured BackWeb to work with HTTP (with or
  241.    without an HTTP proxy).

  243.    BackWeb Technologies is doing its best to make sure all the channels are
  244.    using the latest version of the BackWeb channel server which supports a
  245.    wide range of HTTP proxies.
